Exercises / Re: Has anyone tried Hip Hop Abs?
« on: October 19, 2012, 08:03:55 AM »
It's great that you have found exercise you enjoy. I think any program which attracts people who don't exercise is a good thing. It sounds like a cool theme for a workout, what does it involve?

Workout Programs / Weekend off?
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:52:07 AM »
What do you do with regards to exercise during the weekend? I usually have the weekend off and use it as a time to recuperate from the training during the week. I know people who do squats on Saturday, that doesn't appeal to me at all.

Supplements / D3
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:33:13 AM »
Vitamin D3 is a very important vitamin, deficiency in vitamin D will increase the risk of numerous serious diseases. The best source of vitamin D is the sun but many of us are not fortunate enough to have year-round sunny weather and this is where supplementation plays an important role. Vitamin D3 is what your body produces from sunlight and you can actually buy D3.

Do you supplement with D3?

Supplements / Re: Best Bodybuilding Supplements for Women
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:03:43 AM »
Women will not be able to build muscle without testosterone. That's why you will never see a natural female bodybuilder with huge muscles, women are limited by their hormonal environment. Oestrogen is good for gaining fat, not muscle.

Exercises / Re: Shoulder Press Form
« on: October 19, 2012, 05:48:13 AM »
No, elbows slightly in and forward will increase your strength because you are in a more compact and stable position, that's the point. Elbows slightly in will reduce the risk of injury and increase the load, it's a win-win.

Motivation / Re: A good tip is to join a group.
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:59:00 AM »
Groups can help because the members can motivate and support you. You are also accountable to the group, being accountable to someone is always a good thing. I'm not in a group myself but I train with my brother and we have the same philosophy on training and nutrition, it helps having a partner.

Some of my favorite healthy snacks are fresh fruits like watermelon, honey dew, peaches and apples. I also like to snack on almonds and fat free jello squares. I am actually looking for some others to try so it is good I came to this thread.

Fat free jello squares are far from healthy. The whole 'fat free and 'low-fat' dogma is a big part of the reason we have an obesity epidemic! Sugar and carbohydrates are the reason people are fat.

Workout Log / Re: Jessica's Workout Log!

Well done for taking action and starting an exercise program.

Make sure you have a nutrition plan because what you eat is far more important when it comes to fat loss. Do you have a nutrition plan?

Exercises / Shoulder Press Form
« on: October 18, 2012, 05:26:58 AM »
The shoulder press is a popular exercise. The common 'bodybuilding' form for the shoulder press is with the elbows out. This form will cause harm to your rotator cuff in the long term. A safer way to press is with your elbows slightly in and forward, you will be in a much stronger position.

Do you press the bodybuilding way?

Fitness / Re: Martial Arts/Self Defense

I have experience in judo, albeit limited experience. I joined a judo class when I was a kid but I never really took it seriously, it was fun.

My brother talked about starting Krav Manga. There is a Krav Manga show on the active channel and I've picked up a few moves from that.

I have a cool recipe for a genuinely healthy hummus. Hummus without all the antinutrients and carbohydrates found in chickpeas.  Replace the chickpeas with a skinned courgette (zucchini). You will be pleasantly surprised.

Nutrition / Re: Good food for building up energy?
« on: October 15, 2012, 05:34:45 AM »
Carbohydrates are good sources of energy for your workouts but the problem with carbohydrates is that you will soon feel hungry when your blood glucose levels fall back down. Fat provides sustainable energy, you will burn dietary fat and body fat once your body reprograms to a fat burning metabolism.

Workout Equipment / Re: Makeshift workout equipment
« on: October 15, 2012, 05:32:31 AM »
My stairs are not big enough and I would mess up the carpet, haha.

I would use stairs if I never near a tower block with a concrete staircase. It can be a high intensity workout if you jump across multiple steps.

Motivation / Re: Keeping a journal
« on: October 15, 2012, 05:29:46 AM »
I have a journal to keep track of my progress. I have journals since I started 5 years ago, I will keep them for the rest of my life, like a souvenir for all my hard work.

My journal is simple, I write down the week number, the exercise, weight and reps.

Workout Programs / Crossfit
« on: October 15, 2012, 05:18:07 AM »
I'm not a fan of Crossfit. There is too much emphasis on conditioning for my liking and I think the Crossfit workouts are prone to causing injury because of the high repetitions. Doing 25 reps of clean and press, for example, seems pointless...

Have any of you tried Crossfit? Do you think it is a good program?
