Favorite Healthy Snacks
« on: October 10, 2012, 12:52:54 PM »
What are your favorite healthy snacks? What do you reach for when you have the munchies and just have to have something between meals?

I like to have pita chips and hummus (in moderation) when I must have a snack. Sometimes I like to also have celery with peanut butter.

My favorite healthy snacks are fresh fruits like oranges and apples. If I am craving salt then I too go for the celery with peanut butter.  I also sometimes make a fruit smoothie from frozen strawberries and water.

pretzels with little salt are my favorite snacking meal and all natural oatmeal cookies are pretty good too. I like celery and peanut butter but I always tend to want to eat more if it and theres never enough made ahead of time! :)

Pita chips and hummus is not really a healthy snack. A combination of grains and legumes, not good for fat loss or health in general.

My favourite healthy snack is coconut cream. I cam happily eat a whole block of it in one sitting, it's like crack!

I also love hummus and crackers, as well as fruit, for snacks. I also like to bake healthy, homemade snacks, like granola bars that are full of yummy ingredients. Peanut butter, dried cranberries, raisins, oats...that type of thing. And oat bars with fruit in the middle. Yum!

I like to mix honey with peanut butter, and then dip fresh apples in the blend. I cannot eat too much of this, though, because the peanut butter adds weight pretty quickly.

During the coldest winter months, I bake oatmeal cookies, sweetened with honey. I also add a few nuts and dried cranberries. Amazingly enough, I actually lose weight if I eat these homemade cookies, but I'll gain weight if I eat store bought oatmeal cookies.

If you have snack cravings for a particular taste try these healthy ones I got from a magazine and tested myself (so don't worry they really do taste good).

For creamy cravings

-Take half of a medium sized potato, pierce it then microwave for about 4 minutes and top with a tablespoon of sour cream ( fatfree) and salsa. It's just 81 calories with 0.5 g fat.

For sweet with a zing

-Cube some mango about 3/4 cup. squeeze a bit of lime juice and toss some red pepper flakes. Just 86 calories and 0.5 g fat.

Enjoy!

I love avocado. Sometimes I'll take that and some tomatoes and make a salad out of it.

I have a cool recipe for a genuinely healthy hummus. Hummus without all the antinutrients and carbohydrates found in chickpeas.  Replace the chickpeas with a skinned courgette (zucchini). You will be pleasantly surprised.

Some of my favorite healthy snacks are fresh fruits like watermelon, honey dew, peaches and apples. I also like to snack on almonds and fat free jello squares. I am actually looking for some others to try so it is good I came to this thread.

Fat free jello squares are far from healthy. The whole 'fat free and 'low-fat' dogma is a big part of the reason we have an obesity epidemic! Sugar and carbohydrates are the reason people are fat.
